Drink Gourmet Tea Because Cheap Tea May be Bad for You

A study at the University of Derby in England indicates that drinking large amounts of low grade, cheap tea from industrial tea bags may be bad for you.  Too much low quality tea may contain too much fluoride, leading to skeletal and dental problems.  I thought fluoride was supposed to be good for your teeth, but it's seems that there can be too much of a good thing.

Many people are unaware that tea varies a lot in quality, just like wine or beer.  There are different kinds of teas and different grades.  The quality of the leaves can also vary from year to year as well as seasonally.

So what's the problem?  The familiar tea bag (as opposed to our pyramid tea bags) requires very strong, black tea to work.  That tea is what's left over at the end of the season and tends to be a lot cheaper than premium teas harvested earlier in the year.  The strong tea can be ground up almost to a powder, allowing the tea bag to convey the tea flavor.  The combination of the convenience of the tea bag as well as the ability to use large quantities of cheap low grade tea is why loose leaf tea almost disappeared.

The downside is that cheap tea does not taste very good.  Many people I talk to don't like tea, but have never had a really good tea.  It would be like having ridden in a Yugo years ago and concluding you don't like cars.

The further problem that Lecturer Chan discovered in her PhD work was that the tea plant collects fluoride over time.  Leaves harvested at the end of the year have the most fluoride.  Her research indicates that drinking a lot of cheap tea could cause problems.

So, what's the solution?  Drink better teas!  Like ours!  It will be like moving from a Yugo to a Porsche.
